Inductee Bio
I started surfing at a young age as my parents both surfed. They had the first surf shop in my home town of Newcastle, and we lived in a small apartment on top of the shop, so I was surrounded by surfboards. I became interested in shaping, after spending school vacations with Geoff McCoy in Brookvale in Sydney. Geoff supplied surfboards to our shop, along with Midget Farrelly , Gordon Woods & Barry Bennett. I learnt the basics of shaping, glassing and sanding, by watching the craftsmen in Geoffs factory . There was no tuition, I just observed and learnt the process. During my teenage years I was shaping boards for myself and my friends in a space behind our store. I was given an electric planer for Christmas when I was 13 years old. These boards were fairly rustic, I was making it up as I went along. I had a vision in my mind of how I wanted a board to be, but didn't have the planer skills to create it. This all changed in 1977 when I was 20 years old. I stayed on after the Hawaiian contest season to shape with, and learn from Dick Brewer. He gave me tuition, and showed me processes with the planer and hand tools to create the board to match the vision in my mind. He was the single greatest influence on my shaping career, and I wouldn't have become the shaper I am today without his sharing of knowledge and guidance. There have been other shapers who have generously shared their skills and knowledge with me over the years, in particular… Ben Aipa, Reno Abellira, Jim Richardson, Gerry Lopez, Tom Parrish, Pat Rawson and Matt Biolos. I have been very fortunate that no-one has ever considered me a 'threat' to their business, so they have willingly shared .. I have always had a very small scale operation, and I wouldn't be where I am today without the collective help of all my mentors. I am very flattered and honored to be recognized for my contribution to surfboard shaping and design, and am proud to be Inducted as a member of the International Surfboard Builders Hall of Fame | |||
